Researcher - Climate Model Development

Deadline: until filled


The Integrated Climate Impacts (ICI) Research Group  within the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program is recruiting a researcher with a background in (climate) physics, climate science, or scientific software design. The successful candidate will work with a team of international scientists developing the work on Simple Climate Models and emulators and contribute to the development of emulator and statistical models for the representation of climate risks.

 

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Contribute in a leading role to all developments of the climate assessment workflow in the ECE program. This includes steps like harmonization, infilling and running the global-mean, emissions-driven simple climate models.

  • Contribute to the development of the simple climate model MAGICC and community projects in the space of simple climate model development.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the ECE strategy for deploying AI and machine learning for climate data analysis, emulation, downscaling, and bias correction.

  • Contribute to ongoing and future projects and related deliverables, reports, stakeholder communication and capacity building activities.

 

Skills, qualifications and experience

  • Min. master’s degree in computer sciences, natural sciences or a related field (PhD is an asset).

  • Proven working experience in scientific software development in the field of climate science

  • Strong demonstrable programming skills in Python (or comparable). Experience with Fortran or another low-level programming language an asset.

  • Strong methodological and technical skills.

  • Proficiency in using AI and machine learning for climate data analysis is an asset.

  • A degree of flexibility and willingness to travel.

  • Fluency in English and excellent presentation skills.

  • IIASA offers an interdisciplinary and international workplace, and the possibility to interact with researchers of different nationalities, with strong ties to a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental systems research. The successful candidate must be able to work in, and have respect for, an intercultural environment, and IIASA core values.

 

Appointment terms

The successful candidate should be available to take up the position in January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. We offer an initial fixed-term, full-time employment contract for one year, with the possibility for extension thereafter.

 

Eligible applicants wishing to work part-time hours may be considered.
