Congratulations to Danila Beliavskii on his acceptance to the IIASA Summer School on Systems Modeling.

Danila Beliavskii is a second-year PhD student in the Plant Ecology lab at Tel Aviv University, where his research focuses on the impact of multi-year drought on plant community dynamics and soil seed banks in Mediterranean shrubland ecosystems.

Danila started his ecological education at Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Ecology with honors. During his studies, he combined ecological research with extensive fieldwork experience, participating in long-term expeditions across various regions of Russia and Mongolia.

Before making aliyah and starting his PhD at Tel Aviv University, he had experience as a researcher in Arctic ecosystem studies and as an analyst in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow Region.

Danila Beliavskii is the Israeli student selected to participate in the IIASA Summer School for Systems Modeling 2026.

Danila's research is about the impact of multi-year extreme drought on plant community dynamics and soil seed banks in a Mediterranean shrubland ecosystem. He also takes part in other studies at the Matta long-term ecological research station. The research supervisor is Prof. Marcelo Sternberg (https://en-lifesci.tau.ac.il/profile/marcelos).

The Summer School will run from 29 June - 10 July 2026 in Laxenburg, Austria.

In this summer school, IIASA provides systematic guidance on the development and use of mathematical and computer models, addressing uncertainties in data and processes, exploring solution spaces, and distilling viable options for taking policy action. Our goal is to equip you with a solid understanding of modeling practices and limitations of models.

The two-week course is designed for Master’s and PhD students, as well as post-doctoral researchers who wish to use or develop models broadly related to the sustainability agenda. It is open to newcomers but also to those who have already been exposed to modeling and would like to add depth to their experience. It is also open to systems researchers who would like to gain a better understanding of the available tools. Many examples we will discuss are taken from IIASA’s portfolio of tools and methods, ranging from ecological models, socioeconomic systems, to integrated assessment tools of energy, air, water, biodiversity, and food.
