Archimedes is a national knowledge center that promotes the field of applied systems analysis in Israel, with an emphasis on complex systems and their optimization, through the use of models such as Integrated Assessment Models (IAM), multi-agent models, and more. The center strives to encourage the implementation of policy solutions aimed at reducing the human footprint, enhancing the resilience of natural and human systems, and supporting the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The core focus of the center is research, development, and application of models in various domains of complex and dynamic systems. The Archimedes Center has a partnership with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria.

As a national center, one of its goals is to encourage and support research activity and the personal development of young researchers in the field of applied systems analysis in all official research institutions in Israel.

In the academic year 2025–2026, the Archimedes Center will grant scholarships through a competitive process, open to graduate research students from all academic institutions in Israel, whose research topics are related to the research activity carried out at the Archimedes Center, under one of the center's research groups. Applicants are invited to submit their candidacy to receive a 50% scholarship from the Archimedes Center, for one or two semesters, depending on the center’s resource availability.

All applications will undergo a competitive review process by a committee with representatives from various institutions, and the winners will be selected based on available resources.

Application Submission

The research proposal and scholarship application must be submitted via an online form [in Hebrew], the link to which appears in this official call and on the Archimedes website.

The application must be accompanied by a recommendation letter from the applicant's direct advisor, to be sent to the Archimedes Center at archimedes@tauex.tau.ac.il from the advisor’s official email address.

The email subject line should be: Recommendation Letter – [Candidate's Name] – Archimedes Scholarship\ מכתב המלצה - שם המועמד - מלגת ארכימדס

The recommendation letter must state that the advisor commits to matching the scholarship amount awarded by Archimedes.

The advisor must also specify the amount of time the student dedicates to research and, accordingly, the percentage of the scholarship requested.

For example:

Students dedicating 4–5 days/week to research are eligible for a full scholarship.

Students dedicating 3 days/week are eligible for 75% of the scholarship.

Students dedicating 2 days/week are eligible for 50% of the scholarship.

Evaluation Criteria for Proposals

• Originality and innovation of the proposal

• Contribution of the research results to decision-makers in Israel

• Relevance to applied systems analysis in one of the research groups of Archimedes / IIASA

• Inclusion of a case study based on Israeli data

• Extent of time dedicated to research by the candidate

• Additional funding available to the student for conducting the research

• The research proposal has been approved by the institution where the applicant is studying

Emphasis on Publishing Research Output

The Archimedes Center will give preference to candidates intending to publish their research in leading peer-reviewed journals.

In any publication related to the scholarship-supported research, scholars are required to acknowledge the support of the Ministry of Science and the Archimedes Center.

At the end of the scholarship period, all scholarship recipients must submit a formal report summarizing their achievements during the scholarship term.

The scholarship funds will be transferred between the research authorities of the recipients’ institutions, with no overhead.

Emphasis on Publishing Research Outputs

The Archimedes Center will give priority to advanced candidates who intend to publish their research in leading peer-reviewed journals.

In any research publication related to the scholarship topic, recipients will be required to acknowledge the support of the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and the Archimedes Center using the following wording:

“This research was supported by the Ministry of Innovation, Science & Technology, Israel, through its support in the Archimedes Center – the Israeli knowledge center for applied systems analysis.”

Additionally, at the end of the scholarship year, all scholarship recipients will be required to submit an organized report summarizing their achievements during the scholarship period.

Intellectual Property

Intellectual property rights of any kind in the research outcomes will belong to the party whose researchers made inventive contributions to their development. If the research outputs result from a joint inventive contribution by researchers from both parties, the rights will be divided between the parties based on a mutual agreement and according to their respective direct inventive contributions. A written agreement will be established between the parties, outlining the rights and obligations regarding the joint intellectual property, including its management and commercialization details. It is agreed that each party may use the joint intellectual property for teaching and research purposes.
