תקציר:
בהרצאה תדון מניה בהגירה כפויה בעקבות קונפליקט ואירועי אקלים קיצוניים, בקשר ביניהם ועל אסטרטגיות התמודדות עימם. נדבר על שיטות הסתגלות לאירועים אלה הכוללת הגירה ונדבר על איך כל זה משפיע על ילדים. בהרצאה ישולבו בקצרה ארבעה מחקרים העוסקים בהשפעות של סיכונים ומשברים על ילדים שנשארו ואלה שהיגרו: (1) חשיפה של ילדים לסכנות אקלימיות ב- 2050 (2) ביטחון בית ספרי באזורי סיכון (3) ילדים שנשארו מאחור LBC והתמודדות עם משברים (4) קליטת מהגרי אקלים ופליטים בקמפלה, אוגנדה.
אודות המרצה:
מניה היא סוציולוגית של חינוך והגירה, המתמקדת באופן שבו חינוך והגירה בכפייה (עקב סכסוכים ואקלים) משפיעים על חייהם של ילדים ומשפחות בעקירה. מחקריה בוחנים את חוויותיהם החינוכיות של ילדים פליטים ומהגרים בישראל ובדרום הגלובלי, בדגש על מזרח אפריקה והקשרים של עקירה עירונית. עבודתה חוקרת כיצד מדיניות אינטגרציה, פרקטיקות בית־ספריות ונורמות חברתיות מעצבות את ביטחונם, תחושת השייכות והגאוגרפיות היומיומיות של ילדים, ומדגישה את התפקידים המצטלבים של מגדר, מעמד פליטות והדרה. כיום מניה היא עמיתת פוסט־דוקטורט במסגרת מלגת ארכימדס במכון הבינלאומי לניתוח מערכות שימושיות (IIASA) באוסטריה, בהנחיית ד״ר רומן הופמן. לפני הצטרפותה ל–IIASA הייתה עמיתת פוסט־דוקטורט בתוכנית „Global Shifts: Urbanization, Migration and Climate Change” במכון Perry World House, אוניברסיטת פנסילבניה. היא סיימה את הדוקטורט בבית ספר לחינוך מאוניברסיטת בן־גוריון בנגב בהנחייתן של פרופ הללי פינסון ופרופ לין שלר.

Abstract (originally published in Hebrew):
In this lecture, Dr. Kagan will discuss forced migration resulting from conflict and extreme climate events, the links between these phenomena, and strategies for coping with them. The lecture will explore adaptation methods, including migration, and examine how these processes affect children.
The presentation will briefly integrate four studies on the effects of risks and crises on children who remain in place and those who migrate:
Children’s exposure to climate hazards in 2050.
School safety in high-risk areas.
Left-behind children (LBC) and coping with crises.
Reception of climate migrants and refugees in Kampala, Uganda.
About the speaker:
Manya is a sociologist of education and migration, focusing on how education and migration policy affect displaced children and families in urban areas. She is an Archimedes Postdoctoral fellow at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. Manya works in the Migration and Sustainable Development Group, led by Dr. Roman Hoffmann. She is working on a project that examines the urban readiness of education and health systems in Uganda, Bangladesh, Poland, Germany, Brazil, and Israel to receive displaced children. Before joining IIASA, she was a postdoctoral research fellow in the “Global Shifts: Urbanization, Migration and Climate Change” program at Perry World House, University of Pennsylvania. Manya received my Ph.D. in Sociology of Education from Ben Gurion University in the Negev in 2023. Her dissertation project focused on the integration of refugee children in primary schools in Kampala, Uganda.
In addition to her research, Manya has taught courses on research methods, childhood and youth, development and forced migration.
