״מורכבות״ הוא שם כולל לקבוצת תיאוריות על מערכות פתוחות, המאופיינות בארגון-עצמי. המאה ה-21 היא גם ״עידן העיר״ – לראשונה בתולדות האנושות למעלה ממחצית האוכלוסייה בעולם מתגוררת בישובים עירוניים. הבנת הדינאמיקה העירונית היא לכן המפתח להתמודדות עם בעיות החברה האנושית במאה ה-21.
קבוצת המחקר ׳ערים ומורכבות׳ תתמקד בהבנת העיר כמערכת מורכבת ובמשמעויות של הבנה זו, בתחומי התכנון והעיצוב העירוני, והן בהקשרים חברתיים, תרבותיים, כלכליים ופוליטיים של החברה בכללותה.
יובל פורטוגלי, ראש מרכז העיר לחקר ערים ועירוניות באוניברסיטת תל אביב, פרופ' לגיאוגרפיה אנושית בחוג לגיאוגרפיה וסביבת האדם באוניברסיטת תל אביב. עיסוקו המחקרי של יובל משלב תיאוריות מורכבות וארגון עצמי, קוגניציה סביבתית-מרחבית, דינמיקה אורבנית ותכנון בתקופות מודרניות ועתיקות. פרסומיו כוללים כ-100 מאמרים ו-20 ספרים מדעיים.
"Complexity" is a general term for a group of theories about open systems, characterized by self-organization. The 21st century is also the "Age of the City" - for the first time in human history, more than half of the world's population lives in urban settlements. Understanding urban dynamics is therefore the key to dealing with the problems of human society in the 21st century.
The 'Cities and Complexity' research group will focus on understanding the city as a complex system and the implications of this understanding, in the areas of urban planning and design, and in the social, cultural, economic and political contexts of society as a whole.
Juval Portugali, Professor of Human Geography at the Department of Geography and the Human Environment Tel Aviv University. Head of the Environmental Simulation Laboratory (ESLab) and Head of City Center –Tel Aviv University center for cities and urbanism. Juval Portugali received his BA degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, did his MA studies at the Technion Haifa, and received a London University PhD from The London School of Economics and Political sciences. His research integrates complexity and self-organization theories, environmental-spatial cognition, urban dynamics and planning in modern and ancient periods. His publications include some 100 research articles and 20 scientific books.
